Is the UK losing the fight where crime is concerned?

In the Guardian today the arguement seems to be continuing about the rising murder rate in London. I havn't lived in a city for a long time, so my experience is quite dated.

Have we lost the plot? Is it as bad as some believe? If it is, what on earth can be done to change the situation?

Do you see policemen and women walking the beat in your area?

The system is too heavily weighted in favour of those committing the crime. A bit like pleading hardship if you were to lose your driving license, many will plead hardship.

    A £250 payment/award to a victim may sound a lot, but at a £1 a week, because that's all they can afford,...

When you see nine-ten year olds who are carrying screwdrivers into school, it can make you wonder where does the battle actually begin?

One lost her snap-on screwdriver today when she threw it at me. Missed and I picked it up, walking off with it.

Why did a young girl throw a screwdriver at you?

One of a gang of kids on the street. Possibly just showing off.

Question is, what was her reason for carrying it?

So you were just wandering along minding your own business and a little girl hurled a screwdriver at you for no reason?

As I've said, probably just showing off.

What did she say when you stole her screwdriver?

Doubt it was hers. What was said, I doubt it would make it past the swear filter.

Question remains though, what weas she doing carrying it. Snap-On aren't the cheapest on the market.

    Maybe she's a trainee electrician?
    When did this happen?
Do you work in a school? Is that what's given you the opportunity to see 9/10 year olds carrying screwdrivers into school?

Trainee at nine-ten, doubtful. Also very hard to think of a reason for it being carried.

Ignoring answers to those questions, given before you even asked them.

Now give a valid reason for a nine-ten year old to be carrying a screwdriver.
