Interesting piece in the Guardian - https://www.theguardian.com/comment...-would-it-take-for-labour-moderates-to-revolt

One part that struck me (apart from the title of course) -

"If you look at the worst of today’s generation of radicals – not all of them or most of them but at the worst of them – you notice the persistence of the Leninist style.

In substance, they could not be less interested in the class conflicts that animated the old Marxists and social democrats. The first concerns of their hyper-liberal politics are the fights against sexism, racism, homophobia and transphobia. Compare their tactics instead and you find few differences worth mentioning between old leaders and young followers. The willingness to mount heresy hunts against traitors has found a new home on Twitter. The determination not just to refute opposing arguments but to ban them and destroy their proponents is everywhere. The worst of the young left is just as humourless as its forebears and just as suspicious of irony and complexity."

And over on Cyclechat the fuss of today is about offensive jokes in the jokes thread. Somehow that thread is "a safe haven for sexual offenders" if I recall the comment rightly (it's since been moderated I think)

I thought it was a requirement at the Guardian?

Just so I know where we are, are you aware of the joke that is being discussed and what are your thoughts on it?

I'm another who can't grasp what he's on about.

Taking up the reference to Lenin, Cohen may be trying to say that some of today's radical socialists are more about exerting control rather than promoting what they claim to believe in.

There's lots of people of all political persuasions who seem to think they have a duty to realign the moral compasses of others.

Another one with no clue as to what the guardian journalist is actually talking about. Maybe he is just having an off day.

I think you have distilled what he was trying to say in to 2 neat sentences right there.

I think it was an off-colour joke that is being blown out of all proportion. The Streisand effect at work. Possibly a good argument for a "dislike" button actually.

As a point of order, this is Politics Debated not Cyclechat, can we please ensure that issues from CC don't spill over to here. Many thanks.

Actually I was considering starting a thread of a similar ilk to Regs over there, are you saying that's not allowed?

Start a thread on any relevant topic you wish, what we don't want is issues from CC coming over to here.

Surely the reality is PD is an adjunct of CC and if it's to attract the people who wanted to talk politics and current affairs from CC (and we all know they read the threads here avidly), then a bit of cross-pollination is just the thing to get things growing.

Actually no. The reality is PD is a completely separate forum to CC and open to absolutely anyone whether cc members or not to discuss politics in a civil and respectful manner.

I've no idea what Reg's thread over there was but if you think it will stimulate debate here go ahead.
